New SOL
Vocational Education and Training Assessment Services (VETASSESS) has been given the task of assessing some occupations offshore. A new Skilled Occupation List (SOL)[1] with effect from 26.4.08 adds 7 trade supervisor occupations to those which VETASSESS can assess offshore.
The previous SOL made VETASSESS the assessing authority for various occupations for residents of India, Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka & the UK and this is retained in the new SOL. Occupations which VETASSESS assesses include motor mechanic, joiner and plumber. In Australia these occupations are assessed by The Trades Recognition Authority (TRA). A useful guide to skill assessments is the Australian Skills Recognition Information (ASRI) on the DIAC website at www.immi.gov.au/asri/a-z.htm.
In the latest SOL the occupation of Seafarer – Ship’s Surveyor (ASCO 2542–17) has been removed.
